The Hotel

Not a special picture per se, but one that carries a childhood memory. When we went to France on a family vacation for the very first time, I had enough knowledge of the language to know what a Hôtel de Ville is. My mother didn’t. She just read “hotel” (which means the same in German as it does in English) and wondered about the french custom to commemorate a hotel on decorative plates and other souvenir stuff. I got a good laugh out of it at the time, but haven’t thought about that in over 20 years – until I got my first glimpse of the town hall as we drove into the city.
