Courtship (5 photos)

Yesterday I witnessed something amazing – the courtship of a pair of Common Kestrels.

This was the first time I actually figured out something was going on. I heard some strange calls in the morning, but couldn’t figure out what made them until I saw this male kestrel sitting in the trees at the edge of the farm. It wasn’t the usual “kee-kee-kee”, but more of a very fast “quirrr-rr quirrr-rr”.

Shortly after he joined the female, they both circled over the fields, never far away from each other… but too far away for halfway decent photos (I still don’t have a scope).

Unfortunately during the most dramatic displays I didn’t have a camera on hand. Both of them performed some pretty steep dives right here in the yard, just meters from our living room windows. I was too afraid to miss something to go for the camera. 😉

The female stopped for a minute, the male was still circling above, then they both disappeared.
