Ears or Horns?

Ears or Horns?

The German name of the Horned Grebe translates as “ears diver”. The answer to the question is – of course – neither. They’re feathers.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering why there are so few photos of birds from my Icelandic trip – it wasn’t about the birds. That will hopefully come at a later date, but then not with a tour group. With more time to stick around places we like (I could have happily spent the whole 10 days in the North). With more time to enjoy our surroundings. And definitely with time for birding.

Histrionics

Histrionics

The title of this post comes not from the behaviour (they were very placid), but from the Latin name of the duck – Histrionicus histrionicus.

Finally…

Finally...

I’ve seen a lot of amazing birds on our trip (more than I hoped for), but this one was all everybody else seemed to care about… Yes, they’re cute, yes, they’re funny, but in the end I didn’t care as much about them as I thought.
Maybe because this cropped photo is one of the best looks I got. The one time we (supposedly) got closer, both the Dearest and I were unavoidably detained elsewhere. Not our fault.

Und noch eine Anmerkung für meine deutschen nicht-vogelguckenden Leser: der Vogel heisst Papageitaucher, nicht Papagei-en-taucher!

Unexpected Company

This morning I had some company on my walk. Everything was quiet, only the redwings were singing and then I heard a peep right next to me. This golden plover walked near me for about 10 minutes, even turned around when I did. He only left when I was back at the guest house.

What’s up?

What's up?

The chaffinches are notoriously cautious. They are regular visitors to the feeder, but it’s rare that I get a good close-up.
