Old School

Old School

They went old school with oildrums and barricades. If you haven’t heard about the gilets jaunes (“yellow vests” after the high visibility vests they are wearing), click on the link below. We were lucky during our vacation, there was one traffic jam on our way back from Nantes, but apart from that we never encountered any problems.

Ciel Voilé

This morning’s weather forecast said “Ciel Voilé” with a symbol I hadn’t seen before: a sun with two white stripes across. Literally translated a “veiled sky”, but I have no idea if it means partly cloudy or foggy. Anyway the day was sunny after all.

La Belle inutile

La Belle inutile

Because it was never attacked, this fortress was called “the useless beauty”. France, fortress and Unesco? It was built – of course – by Vauban.

La Reine

La Reine

Vauban called the complex “la Reine des citadelles” (the queen of citadelles) and he should know. 😀 Unfortunately we didn’t know it wouldn’t be possible to actually visit the citadelle. As it is so often the case, the French military uses it. Stupid French military… can’t you at least offer guided tours? But that also explains why one of the best preserved works of Vauban is not listet as a World Heritage Site.
