The griffon vultures at Artis Zoo are special. The zoo takes part in a griffon vulture reintroduction project on Sardinia and one very special chick was released this spring.

In 2017 keepers found an egg on the ground of the vulture enclosure. They didn’t know which breeding pair it belonged to and decided to give it to one pair that would never have chicks of their own. Artis has a long established pair of male griffon vultures and they apparently show every sign a breeding pair would, including building a nest. So they got the egg – and successfully hatched and raised the chick that was released. Such an amazing story!

Thanks to Camilla at caleephotography I got some tips for birding in and around Amsterdam. And while the birding was… meh (wrong time of day – I’m travelling with a late riser), we had a great day watching fallow deer. I’ve never seen them outside of a deer park. And I never noticed the eyes…
I did not see any foxes (apparently around there they aren’t very shy), but I think I might have heard one.

Camilla also has a brandnew Instagram account, go have a look.
