A Bumblebee!

I have a feeling this is one of the insects I rarely see anymore.

Green

Green

Tentatively identified as a young European common frog (junger Grasfrosch), a species that is documented in the national parc. But had I not known that I would have thought it’s a common water frog (Teichfrosch), a species that – as far as I could find out – is not documented in the national parc.

I’ll be posting a few more photos from our last trip, because I haven’t been able to get around much. Not because of the heat (although that was a problem last week as well), but because of a severely infected insect bite brought back from said trip. At times my foot looked like a red ballon, I’m still on antibiotics with doctor’s orders to give the leg some rest.

My first Shrike

I’ve been looking for this one for quite some time now…

Funny story (again about expectations, only this time the other way round) – a few minutes before we reached this spot I told the Dearest that there are supposed to be red-backed shrikes around. Then I was trying to photograph a fritillary, looked up to check where the Dearest had gone, thought, “Okay, a shrike.” and focussed on the butterfly again. “Oh sh*t – a shrike!” Lucky me, the little guy was patiently sitting on his perch, waiting for me to actually realise what I’m seeing…

And here’s the fritillary:

Nothing remarkable to see, right?

Wrong.

A colony of house martins in the middle of a city!

I saw them in the sky and even told the Dearest about them. Still didn’t see the nests until he pointed them out. Just didn’t expect them raising their young in a city…
