The Works of Danes

Last year the complex of fortifications called “Danevirke” together with the Viking village Hedeby became a UNESCO World Heritage site. We already visited Hedeby in 2008 and saw parts of the walls. So this time it was just a quick stop in Dannewerk (there’s also a museum) on our way home.

Because it was never attacked, this fortress was called “the useless beauty”. France, fortress and Unesco? It was built – of course – by Vauban.
